Understanding Hair Transplant Methods: FUT vs. FUE vs. Direct Implantation

If you’re planning to get a hair transplant, chances are you’ve come across hundreds of articles explaining the three modern techniques. We get it — with so many “experts” giving varying advice, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and lost.

This is why we’ve compared the basics of Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT), Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), and Direct Hair Implantation (DHI), so you can make an informed decision.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) is a surgical hair restoration procedure where a strip of scalp containing hair follicles is removed from a donor site (usually the back of the head). The strip is 0.5 to 1.5 cm wide and 3 to 30 cm long.

It is dissected into individual follicular units, with each unit containing 1-4 hairs. The dissected follicular units are transplanted into thinning or balding areas of your scalp.

Key Features of FUT

High Graft Yield – FUT can ensure a high number of grafts in a single session. This is especially beneficial for people with large bald areas.

Natural Appearance – FUT aims to replicate the natural growth pattern of hair, resulting in a natural-looking hairline.

Shorter Surgery Time – FUT takes less time than other transplantation methods, such as FUE.

Donor Scar – FUT leaves a linear scar in the donor area. The good news? It can be concealed by surrounding hair.

Hair transplants are common in big Australian cities, such as Melbourne. You can find numerous reputable clinics for hair transplants Melbourne. Always book a consultation to determine which method is right for you.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

Follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a minimally invasive hair transplant procedure. Instead of removing a strip of scalp like in FUT, FUE involves extracting individual hair follicles directly from the donor area. These hair follicles are transplanted to the recipient area, where the hair is thinning or absent.

Key Aspects of FUE

Graft Harvesting – Tiny punches, typically 0.7-1.2 mm in diameter, are made in the donor area to extract follicular units (1-4 hairs). In FUE, fewer grafts can be transplanted in one session compared to FUT.

Less Invasive – FUE doesn’t require stitching, fast-tracking the recovery process. It is also less invasive than FUT.

No Linear Scar – FUE doesn’t leave a visible, linear scar. You will see scattered and tiny scars, easily covered by hair.

Direct Hair Implantation (DHI)

Direct hair implantation (DHI) is often considered the modern form of FUE. In DHI, tiny hair follicles are extracted from the donor site and directly implanted into the recipient site using a specialised device. Instead of creating incisions, hair surgeons use a Choi Implanter Pen to implant the follicles directly into the scalp.

Key Features of DHI

Minimally Invasive – DHI is the most minimally invasive hair transplantation procedure.

Higher Precision – With a Choi Implanter Pen, surgeons can control the depth, angle, and direction of each implanted hair. This ensures higher precision.

Less Scarring – DHI leaves little to no scarring, reducing the recovery time.
